Artist's Comments

Yes. Well.

Next time I say I can't color because I'm being stupid and comparing myself to other colorists...someone hit me. :D The truth of the matter is that I can color, I just don't do it very often because I don't feel the need to do so.

In this case, I thought I'd give coloring Red a try since he's a trade with SFRB, who usually does his work in color and whom I know is doing actual work for his half of the trade. I figured it was only right to do the same. :) I had intended to color him using my tablet and Photoshop, but I never got around to it so, while Stoker had command of the computer, I plopped down in front of the History Channel and broke out my Big Box o' Prismas. :D

I thought Red would be quick and easy to color but this took three hours and I am SO freaking proud of myself. I couldn't wait until tomorrow night to show off, so here you all go.

Please, no criticisms here. What's done is done, I worked hard on this. I know where I want to improve and I will get upset if anyone (sans close artist friends whom I worship; you know who you are :D) gives unsolicited coloring advice.

Red the dragon belongs to Universal.

Line work: Sharpies (fine tip and ultra fine tip), and Bic pen

Colors: Prismacolor markers

Shiny! I am learning the three-color gradient from you--slowly, it sticks in my brain so that I notice it in leaves and natural lights and stuff like that. The cuffs and his horns catch the eyes immediately here. I dig the smoke coming from his snout--I first thought there should have been a wisp from each nostril, but that would have obscured his evil eyes.

What it boils down to is professional modeling means getting paid to overreact to stuff like rice cakes and new shoes. (Invisible Monsters, Palahniuk)

Oh dear... XD Learning to color? From me?! The world, truly, is coming to an end. :D

I'm not even sure where I picked up this three-gradient color style, but I really like it. It helps bring out the lines and draws the eye just right. I'm in love with it as a coloring technique. ^_^

As for the single-nostril smoking, that's part of why I did it that way; his eyes were great and it would've just been unfair to hide them. I think, too, that an instinct in the back of my mind (the part that is telling the story that goes with every single piece of art I do) was saying that he's SO good with his fire powers that he can smoke out of one nostril instead of both. :D

Really. Good. Colors.

Shading is excellent and really draws out the face, creating depth.

Consistent technique for the win. And you certainly win.

My advice for learning how to use color: Paint an orange. :orange:
